How to start a fire – firepit – campfire

Starting a fire that burns hot, long, and clean is easier than you think — especially with premium hardwood from Wood You Like It. See are video at the bottom of this page…

Step 1: Use Safe Igniters

Reuse untreated paper or natural firelighters to start your fire. This is a sustainable way to make the most of scrap paper or other safe materials.

Step 2: Build Your Kindling Base

Lay smaller sticks and kindling in a criss-cross or teepee shape. This creates airflow and helps the fire catch quickly.

Step 3: Add More Kindling & Paper

Add slightly larger sticks and additional paper on top. This gradually increases the flame without smothering it.

Step 4: Introduce Small Firewood

Start adding small pieces of your premium firewood — we used Blue Gum, chopped with a tomahawk, to create a strong coal base (hot coals that keep your fire alive).

Step 5: Add Larger Firewood

Once your coals are established, add larger logs — we used Coastal Ironbark. With this method, we had a fully established fire in just 5 minutes, producing steady heat.

Step 6: Enjoy Long-Lasting Heat

Our hardwood logs burn long and strong, with each piece lasting around 2 hours. Perfect for indoor fireplaces, slow combustion heaters, or outdoor fire pits.

For our setup for this party we used blocks as seating and tables for drinks..

Pro Tips from Wood You Like It

  • Dense hardwood like Ironbark and Blue Gum burns hotter and longer than most other woods.

  • Let your coal base fully establish before adding the big logs — this ensures maximum burn time and heat.

  • Always practice fire safety and never leave fires unattended.
