Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Firewood

Over the years, I’ve picked up a few tricks to help get the best heat, flavour, and burn quality out of different types of wood. If you’re cooking, heating, or simply enjoying a firepit, these little habits can make a big difference:

  • Season Your Hardwood Properly
Gums, boxes, and other hardwoods perform best when well seasoned (dried out to lower the moisture content). Strip off the bark to reduce smoke and improve burn quality.

  • Aim for a Balanced Burn
The sweet spot is neither a smoulder nor a roaring blaze—a steady, even fire gives you the cleanest and most efficient burn.

  • Refuel at the Right Time
Add new logs while your fire is still running hot. Waiting until it collapses and cools means fresh wood will smoulder instead of catching cleanly.

  • Help Green Wood Along
If your firewood isn’t fully seasoned, split it smaller to speed up drying time. Please note all firewood supplied by WoodULikeIt has been seasoned and dried thoroughly. We even randomly test our woods moisture level.

  • Know Your Fruit and Nut Woods
These can be used half-seasoned (not freshly cut), and you can even soak them first to slow their quick burn rate.

  • Clean After Every Cook
A fresh, clean firebox ensures every new fire starts strong and burns clean.
